Fortified Church of Sant Francesc Xavier

by Consell Insular de Formentera · Formentera

18th-century fortress-church opposite the Consell in Formentera's capital. The official site says it can be visited Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 14:00.

About

Completed in 1738, it was built because the chapel of sa Tanca Vella had become too small, and it was also designed as a defence against pirates: white, austere walls with almost no openings, an iron-clad door with a loophole and a barrel vault. It has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 1996. The Consell's website says it can be visited Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00 but mentions no price; a travel guide says entry is usually free, without official confirmation. Other guides list different hours and the parish publishes Mass times, so confirm first on formentera.es or on 971 32 10 87.
