Roman Castle of Can Blai

by Consell Insular de Formentera · Formentera

Small late Roman fort from the 3rd-4th century beside the La Savina to La Mola road. Wall and tower foundations can be seen in the open air.

About

According to the Consell, it is a small late-Imperial fortification built between the end of the 3rd and the start of the 4th century, at the highest point of the isthmus joining La Mola to the rest of the island. It is square, about 40 m per side, with five rectangular towers; excavations in the 1970s and 1980s suggest it was left unfinished and hardly occupied. The foundations of walls and towers survive. It has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 1994. It stands beside the road, near km 10. Opening hours: not stated. Best early or late in the day, in low light.
