Much of Ibiza's coast faces west, which is why watching the sunset is one of the island's most repeated plans. You do not need to pay or book to enjoy it: there are public coves, cliffs and promenades from which to see the sun drop into the sea, as well as boat, kayak and walking outings timed to arrive at the right moment.

This guide brings together the places named by the tourism guides we checked, the sunset time month by month, what changes with the season and the experiences in our directory that take place at dusk. We have deliberately left out paid venues and clubs: only public places and activities are included here.

When the sun sets, month by month

According to our astronomical calculation for Eivissa (NOAA solar algorithm, the 15th of each month, official time): January, 17:56; February, 18:31; March, 19:01; April, 20:31; May, 20:59; June, 21:21; July, 21:19; August, 20:50; September, 20:03; October, 19:16; November, 17:41 and December, 17:33. Another guide puts sunset around 21:25 near 21 June and 17:30 near 22 December.

Ibiza Spotlight also says on which dates each spot works best, depending on where the sun falls: Benirràs beach from 5 April to 7 September; Heaven's Gate from 15 June to 18 September; the Sant Antoni Sunset Strip from 1 May to 18 October; sa Talaia from 1 May to 31 October; Cap des Falcó from 20 September to 20 March and the Ses Salines salt flats from 10 October to 4 March. Es Vedrà and Cala Comte are listed all year.

Es Vedrà from Cala d'Hort and the south-west coast

Cala d'Hort sits opposite Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell, inside the nature reserve, and is the most sought-after place to see the islet in sunset light. One guide also places a viewpoint at the Torre des Savinar, about 15 minutes' walk from a signposted car park and about 200 metres above the sea. The islet is a nature reserve and landing is forbidden.

You should know that access changed several times in 2026. According to Periódico de Ibiza (6 August 2026), hundreds of people come each August evening and, after the existing car park reopened and new parking areas were set up, traffic is more orderly; in May, the Sant Josep council had regretted the closure of the only legal car park by the landowner's decision, and future management remains under negotiation. We found no current fees or hours: ask the Sant Josep council and do not park on the road verges.

West coast: Cala Comte, Cala Tarida and Sant Antoni

Cala Comte, about 15 minutes from Sant Antoni or Sant Josep, is two adjoining beaches with views of the islets off the coast; the beach restaurants fill up, so book if you want to dine. One of the guides we checked recommends being there at least an hour before sunset. Further south, Cala Tarida has a long white-sand beach, Cala Molí sees the sun set behind the islet of s'Esparter and at Cala Vadella the cliffs frame the sunset.

In Sant Antoni bay, the walk along the rocky shore of Ses Variedes (the so-called Sunset Strip) is public; you do not have to sit at any terrace to watch the sunset. In winter the sun falls around 17:30, many venues close and the area is much calmer. Cala Bassa and Cala Torrent face north and are poor sunset viewpoints.

North: Benirràs, Heaven's Gate and Punta Galera

Cala Benirràs, on the north coast, about 10 minutes by car from Sant Miquel, faces west and is surrounded by juniper trees; on Sundays it is famous for its drumming. Note that, according to La Voz de Ibiza, the Sant Joan ordinance bans disruptive sound devices and unauthorised musical activity, with fines of up to 1,500 euros, and police checks have been carried out. In 2017 the mayor of Sant Joan banned car access on summer Sundays, from 16:00 to 24:00, from 1 June to 1 October (with exceptions for residents, emergency vehicles and the regular bus). We could not confirm what applies in 2026: ask the Sant Joan council. Parking is limited and fills up as dusk approaches.

Heaven's Gate (Las Puertas del Cielo), on the cliffs near Santa Agnès, is reached by walking through pine forest; you can see the mainland and the Ses Margalides islets. Punta Galera, near Portinatx, is the island's northernmost point and the rocks take on pink and orange tones at sunset. Sa Talaia, the island's highest point, is for those who are fit: the path gets dark quickly after sunset, so plan your descent.

In winter: the salt flats and Cap des Falcó

With winter time, the sun sets around 17:40 in November and leaves the sea for short walks. Ibiza Spotlight recommends the Ses Salines salt flats from 10 October to 4 March, because the ponds reflect the sunset and double the image; follow the signs for the beach, park and walk along the dirt tracks next to the large salt mound. From 20 September to 20 March the southern tip of Cap des Falcó, near the airport and Es Codolar beach, also works.

In winter most of the boat sunset outings in our directory are paused (Capitán Nemo's run from May to September), so these two walking spots are the best bet.

Sunset experiences from our listings

By boat: Capitán Nemo's catamaran repeats the morning route towards Es Vedrà with departure between 17:00 and 17:30 depending on the time of year, with a swim stop and snacks (May to September). Take Off Ibiza leaves Sant Antoni port to see coves and caves in afternoon light, for about two and a half hours. Goa Catamaran offers a private catamaran from Cala Jondal towards Atlantis and Es Vedrà (price per boat). In Formentera, Sa Barca de Formentera takes up to 4 or 7 people from La Savina with a snorkelling stop (from 280 euros per boat, according to the listing).

By kayak: Ibizaventura leaves from Cala d'Hort towards Atlantis with Es Vedrà in the background, from March to October; Kayak Ibiza runs three hours around Portinatx, from May to October, from 45 euros, with a swim stop and picnic; and Wet4Fun goes out at dusk from Es Pujols to Punta Prima (about two hours, meeting on the beach around 19:00; some listings show departures only on certain days).

On foot: Ibiza Outdoors has an easy walk to Heaven's Gate of about 6 km, 3 hours and 150 metres of ascent, suitable for children. Balearic Outdoor Adventures leaves on Fridays from 27 March to 30 October 2026 from Santa Agnès, with four rotating routes, from 60 euros, 5 to 10 people and departure between 17:00 and 19:00 depending on the month. And on Sant Antoni beach there is a one-hour yoga class with sunset sessions (25 Swiss francs per adult, according to the listing).

Tips for a sunset without surprises

Arrive in good time, especially in summer: the car parks at Cala d'Hort, Cala Comte and Benirràs fill up. Check the sunset time for the month and head back in daylight: the cliff paths and the sa Talaia track get dark fast. Bring a torch or a phone with battery, something warm and water.

Respect the reserve rules: landing on Es Vedrà is not allowed and the natural areas of the coast have restrictions. On boats, operators may change or cancel a departure if the sea is rough: check their policy before booking.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the sun set in Ibiza?

It depends on the month: around 21:20 in June and July, 20:03 in mid-September, 19:16 in mid-October and between 17:33 and 17:56 in November, December and January (official time, astronomical calculation for Eivissa).

Where can I watch the sunset for free?

In public areas: Cala d'Hort facing Es Vedrà, Cala Comte, the Sant Antoni shoreline promenade, Cala Benirràs or Heaven's Gate. What may cost money is parking or a drink if you sit at a venue, so find out beforehand.

Can you see Es Vedrà at sunset?

Yes: from Cala d'Hort and the Torre des Savinar viewpoint, or from the water by boat or kayak. Landing on the islet is forbidden. Access and parking at Cala d'Hort changed in 2026, so check with the Sant Josep council first.

What can I do at sunset in winter?

The Ses Salines salt flats (10 October to 4 March) and Cap des Falcó (20 September to 20 March) are the spots Ibiza Spotlight recommends for that period. The boat sunset outings in our directory run mostly from May to September or October.

Are the Benirràs drums still played on Sundays?

Guides mention the Sunday tradition, but local press reports ordinances against unauthorised music and police checks. We could not confirm the 2026 situation: ask the Sant Joan council.
